5 top interiors trends for Spring & Summer 2016

Are you buying of a new bed or sofa as part of a room revamp? We explore the top trends that interior designers are predicting for SS16. Read on to discover how to hit the right note with your home décor.

Florals

After the gloom of winter, we look forward to the abundance of spring and summer. Interior decorating allows us to bring garden-fresh blooms indoors. Vases of cut flowers will eventually fade, but floral fabrics last forever (nearly!). Sprinkle bright blooms liberally over cushions, curtains, bed linens and pictures. Walls and the seating itself are the only exceptions: they provide a relatively plain backdrop.

Texture

The fascination with texture in furnishings continues. Now it is used as an accent fabric, such as leather, suede or faux leather, which contrasts with relatively neutral background fabrics. Look out for sofas, chairs and headboards incorporating leather strips on front facings or suede in the back rest, which serves to break up the main block of colour.

Blue

Blue is a new accent colour for the brighter seasons of 2016. Designers are opting for blue tones, mainly French navy and the contrasting, much lighter aquamarine. You can update your ‘look’ with blue cushions, throws and room accessories such as vases and picture frames. Don’t forget you can double up with two trends and include blue floral patterns or potted plants, such as hydrangea, with blue flowers.

Metallics

The magpies among us who love anything shiny are in for a treat this spring. The full range of metallics is ‘in’, with gold being especially popular. Metals act like any highlight colour to attract the eye. They also add texture to a furnishing scheme and a touch of opulence, especially in the case of gold.

Pink

Softest baby pink is a new addition to the neutral palette for SS16. Soft tones work on walls, bedding and paintwork. Contrast with shiny copper or gold. Alternatively, team with clashing reds and bright pinks or stay cool with greys, pastel greens or the other SS16 trend: blue.
