Check whether your shop delivers
Do they charge the earth to deliver? Will they deliver to your address? If the answer to either of these is no, then the furniture isn’t the bargain it appears to be. Luckily Gloucester Furniture offers great value delivery options, so you can shop to your heart’s content with us.
Will the furniture fit?
We can’t say this often enough: check that your lovely new bed or sofa will actually fit through the door and look good in the space you’ve imagined it in. You might have room for a three-seat sofa but if you live in a third floor flat or the lounge is down a narrow passageway, you might need to reconsider. Luckily, there are many flexible seating arrangements that can be more suitable.
Do you need to buy new?
With the vogue for vintage, many people are upgrading second-hand furniture. This makes sense if you have time on your hands and plenty of creative talent. If not, buying new seems sensible and will avoid having half-finished projects cluttering up your home. Remember that new furniture is more likely to comply with recent fire regulations too, so it can be safer. It is now illegal to sell furnishings that don’t comply, but some places still might be unaware of the dangers.
Check prices for the same or similar products
It always makes sense to shop around when buying more costly ‘investment’ pieces, such as furniture. By comparing prices for similar items, you might find that you can save a lot of money. Sometimes big brands offer better quality and sometimes you can find that you’re just paying for the name. If in doubt, ask your furniture retailer to explain why one costs more than another. That way, you can use their expertise to make sure you’re getting good value.
Think: does the furniture do what you need it to do?
You might admire that large dining table and if you’re a family of six, it makes sense to buy one that you can all sit around to eat together. On the other hand, if there are just two of you, it might make better sense to buy something smaller. Save space and money! On the other hand, if you have lots of room and can afford the king-size bed or L-shaped sofa – why not?
Cash or card payments?
Check that you can use your preferred method of payment. Do they accept credit and debit cards or PayPal? It is important that the furniture store offers terms that are convenient to you, allowing you to use your credit card to stage payments if that suits you best. Some, like us, will allow a deposit with the balance paid on delivery or finance terms.
Can you see the furniture in a store?
Buying online is convenient but it’s good to be able to see the items before making major purchases. This gives you the chance to ask questions, compare fabrics, colours and suitability and sit on the furniture! It’s much better to make the trip from your home in Gloucestershire (or Wiltshire, Worcestershire or Bristol) and to be certain of buying the perfect sofa or bed. If you can’t make it to our store, we’d be happy to chat to you about your requirements.
Can you have it in red?
The best furniture stores – and we count Gloucester Furniture among these – will offer a bespoke service, allowing you to have your choice of sofa or suite make up in a range of fabrics and colour-ways. Come and view the swatches and samples in store – and bring along anything that needs to match, such as curtains or cushions.
